French Open 2022: Carlos Alcaraz surpasses Karen Khachanov to prepare for Alexander Zverev clash

On a day when his idol Rafael Nadal was tested thoroughly, Carlos Alcaraz made it to the French Open quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-4 6-4 victory over Karen Khachanov.

Nadal had to dig deep to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in five sets but there were no such problems for Alcaraz.

Khachanov was impressive beating Britain’s No. 1 Cameron Norrie in the previous round but was crushed by Alcaraz.

The teenager dominated from the start on the Philippe-Chatrier court and wrapped up the victory in two hours and 14 minutes to set up a meeting with Alexander Zverev.

“It was a great game,” Alcaraz told Cube Eurosport. “I had to stay focused from start to finish.

“I started aggressive, dominated the game and tried to keep my level throughout the game.”

Advancing steadily towards the net, Alcaraz said: “I’m a player who likes drop shots and volleys. My style is to be aggressive, so I try to go to the net as many times as possible.

“I like people talking about you, knowing you. It’s pressure, but I try to have that pressure as motivation.

“I like to play in the biggest stadiums in front of a lot of people.”

Alcaraz got off to a flying start, playing with Khachanov from the baseline and giving his opponent no time to prepare to hit his booming groundstrokes.

“Was it a forehand or a thunderbolt? – Alcaraz fires an unstoppable shot

After being made to look second rate in the first set, Khachanov made a decent fist from the second and put the teenager under pressure. But as he has done many times before this season, Alcaraz soaked it up and fought back with interest.

A break of serve proved enough to move him two sets down the good, and an early break at the start of the third put him on the path to the winning line.

Khachanov found a break of serve, to collect the tied third set, but that only served to fire Alcaraz who pulled back and sealed the match with one of the shots of the tournament – a tweener lob for a winner.

It was unbelievable and put a stop to any thought of a Khachanov comeback as victory was wrapped up shortly after.
