MAHE and bioMérieux will create a center of excellence on antibiotic resistance

Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal and bioMérieux (a French multinational biotechnology company) have signed a framework agreement to create a Center of Excellence for “Antimicrobial Resistance” (AMR) and “ Antimicrobial Stewardship” (AMS).

A laboratory will be located at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal in this regard.

While MAHE will use its panel of academic, technical and business experts to address the topic of AMR and AMS; bioMérieux will provide expertise in advanced diagnostic technologies, IT and laboratory automation, as well as training and quality management support.

Quoting Lt. Gen. MD Venkatesh, vice-chancellor of MAHE, a statement said MAHE views bioMérieux as a global partner with a long-standing commitment and expertise in infectious disease diagnostics and a strong presence around the world. “We are confident that working together will enhance the efficiency and quality of patient care and show significant improvement in antimicrobial stewardship measures,” he said.

Rajan Nagar, Vice-President and General Manager of bioMérieux, South Asia, declared: “We are delighted with this partnership because we benefit from the expertise of the best microbiologists and clinicians of the Academy of Higher Education of Manipal to fighting antimicrobial resistance and developing antimicrobial stewardship solutions. We believe that rapid patient outcomes and epidemiological insights will allow microbiologists and clinicians to work together more closely and effectively to improve patient care.

A dedicated team from bioMérieux accompanies MAHE to support its AMS initiatives to optimize the use of antibiotics and fight against the transmission of multi-resistant organisms.

Citing a report by The Lancet, the statement said 1.27 million people die from AMR each year. If left unchecked, antimicrobial resistance could kill 10 million people each year by 2050. SMA is critical to fighting resistance and maintaining the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations because it allows patients to get the right medication, at the right dose, at the right time. .

BioMérieux provides diagnostic solutions (systems, reagents, software and services) that determine the source of disease and contamination to improve patient health and ensure consumer safety. Its products are mainly used to diagnose infectious diseases, he said.
